Jots and Thoughts

It's o11y time! October 19, 2022

I'm fascinated by Observability (a.k.a. o11y). The discipline is expanding and maturing at an incredible clip.

Last year Gartner listed it at the pinnacle of their "2021 Hype Cycle for Software Engineering":

For 2022, three observability-related technologies are emerging within "Optimized technology delivery":

  • Data observability is the ability to understand the health of an organization’s data landscape, data pipelines and data infrastructure by continuously monitoring, tracking, alerting, analyzing and troubleshooting incidents.

  • Observability-driven development (ODD) is a software engineering practice that provides fine-grained visibility and context into system state and behavior by designing systems to be observable.

  • OpenTelemetry is a collection of specifications, tools, application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits (SDKs) that describe and support the implementation of an open-source instrumentation and observability framework for software.

I grabbed a snapshot to highlight where these are on the 2022 curve below. I'm excited to see what 2023 holds. I'll hazard a guess that OpenTelemetry will rise significantly, given the maturation of Metrics and Logs this year and the inclusion of Profiling.
